Analyze in excel on dedicated capacity
Hi all,
I was reading MS documentation on this but it looks like documentation is not to updated.
Setup is following:
- We use premium capacity
- I want to have few as possible PBI Pro licences for Report Creators
- I will keep my workspaces on dedicated capacity (Premium licence) with more than 700 users accessing
- We use Analyze in Excel option a lot (200+ users)
Question is following:
Does user need to have pro licence in order to access dataset on dedicated capacity?
Since here they are saying yes
While here they are saying not.
In addition to this I am curious can i add Build Permission to users without Pro licence?
This is needed for users to access via Excel, right?
Since here they are saying
"Build permission applies to datasets. When you give users Build permission, they can build new content on your dataset, such as reports, dashboards, pinned tiles from Q&A, and Insights Discovery."
So lets say if i add build permission to group of users that dont have pro licences:
- Will this permission be ignored, since build is giving above mentioned permissions which is possible only if user have PRO licence?
- Will my user be able to access via Excel?
I hope out there will be at least someone that can make this permission rules a bit clearer.

Hi, @Anonymous
'Analyze in Excel' is a way to share. No matter which option you choose, to share your content you need a Power BI Pro license, or the content needs to be in a Premium capacity. It means you can share content with users who have a free license if the content in a Premium capacity.
'Analyze in Excel' requires users to have 'Build Permission' for datasets so that they can access the dataset and create new things from it. About giving and removing build permission, you may refer the following document .
Best Regards
Allan
