I have a subscription I am testing out to run, today it failed saying there was no gateway connection, when I logged in to look at the data issue, the report populated just fine. I am relatively new to power bi, does this happen often?

Hi @Anonymous ,

You need to keep your gateway running and connecting to Internet when you refresh the data. 
If you don't open the terminal or are offline, service cannot find anything to refresh.

How do I assure that it is on?

You could open the task manager to check if it exists.

And you could go to dataset settings to check if it is online.

Are you running the gateway on your personal/server computer ? Check if it turned off.
