Hello community,
I encountered an inconsistent behavior in the Matrix visual related to hierarchy navigation. The “Go to next level in the hierarchy” (drill down) button becomes disabled (greyed out), even though the hierarchy is correctly defined and was previously working.
1. The “Expand all down one level in the hierarchy” button continues to work and allows expanding to the lowest level.
2. After expanding all the way down to the lowest level, the “Go to next level” button becomes active again.
3. There is no issue with the data model (fields are from the same dimension and hierarchy order is correct).
What i tried is deleting and recreating the Matrix visual resolves the issue temporarily.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a known issue?
Version: 2.152.1279.0 64-bit (March 2026)
Hi @anilelmastasi,
Thanks for the clarification. Also, thanks to @krishnakanth240, @Odet_Maimoni, for those inputs on this thread
Since the issue only affects older Matrix visuals and works fine when recreated, it doesn’t appear to be related to your hierarchy or measures. This is likely due to older visuals retaining an inconsistent drill state after updates, which causes the “Go to next level” button to stay disabled. Recreating the visual resets this state and resolves the issue. You can try resetting the drill state (expand all levels or toggle drill mode), but this may not consistently work.
Currently, rebuilding the affected visuals is the most reliable fix. Similar behavior has also been reported in the Fabric community where the drill button becomes greyed out and rebuilding the visual resolves it:

This appears to be a limitation with older visuals rather than anything specific to your setup.
Hope that clarifies. Let us know if you have any doubts regarding this. We will be happy to help.
Thank you for using the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.
Can you share the stepwise images at which point it has become greyed out from "Go to next level in the hierarchy” (drill down) button. Sample data of table columns and measures you are using.
Hello @krishnakanth240 ,
Unfortunately, if i recreate this case, it works. But matrix visuals which are created before has this problem. I think it is a bug. I talked with another professionals, they face with this problem - old matrix visuals does not have that button - on their client too.
Can you show or describe how you put the measures and columns in the visual?
Hello @Odet_Maimoni ,
I put explicit measures on values and hierarchy from dimension table on rows. If i recreate the visual it works but for older matrix visuals that published before have this problem. On service and desktop.
