Error with sign in

I'm trying to sign in from the PBI Desktop app and keep getting various error messages, some more descriptive than others.

The current one I'm getting is:

Unable to sign in
Sorry, we encountered an error while trying to sign you in. Details: An error occurred while sending the request.

If I'm not connected to the corporate VPN I get the following (but not always):

Unable to sign in
Sorry, we encountered an error while trying to sign you in. Details: The browser based authentication dialog failed to complete. Reason: The server or proxy was not found.

Sometimes, the sign in process works after a few goes, but it never remembers that I'm signed in when I next launch PBI Desktop.

Version 2.80.5803.1061 64-bit (April 2020)

Any help greatly appreciated.

2 ACCEPTED SOLUTIONS

Thanks for your support here. It looks like it might have been a proxy issue. "netstat -o" was showing that my laptop was trying to connect to a 10. address even when I wasn't connected to a VPN. I'll try again tomorrow to see if that was definitely the cause.

Yes, it was definitely the proxy. I needed to turn the corporate proxy settings off while working from home and not connected to the VPN. Since I've done that I've had no issues getting signed in to Power BI Desktop.

Thanks everyone for their help!

Hi @HairyDrumroll ,

Accoding to your problem, you could refer to these two methods.

1. Disable your anti-virus and firewall. Check if it works.

2. Update to the latest version( 2.81.5831.501 May 2020 ).

Thanks Eads, I'm not able to disable the AV on my work laptop and I can't even update to the latest version as the installation is through the Microsoft Store.

Mind you, it just worked after a re-boot.

@HairyDrumroll , Is it for power bi server inhouse or hosted.

First, check if you login is working with power bi service.

Hosted. I've had no problems logging in online, either with Google Chrome or Edge.

Hi @HairyDrumroll

You're using Desktop, right?

LOL, I just got the same error!  Here's how I fixed it:

1. Make sure you're using the proper login/passw -- You corporate login may not be the same as your Power BI login

2. Ensure you're not logged in to another Microsoft app via a browser or cloud app.  Close program/app, and close browser, clear cache and see if that's the issue.

It worked for me, hope it helps you too.

Michele

Yes, I am using Desktop, I don't have a separate login, and I'm not sure how to clear the cache in PBI Desktop.

Hello @HairyDrumroll

Clear the browser cache. Sometimes, if you have provided your credentials for a browser-based application and those credentials are different from those you use for Desktop..... The desk may be confused. It worked for me, hoping it's going to work for you.

Thank you

Michele
