how to export a matrix table visual to excel

I have a matrix table in a Power BI. The pbix file is published to powerbi. com. Some users want to download the matrix, however, when the table is exported to Excel, it lost the hiearachies and becomes a flat table.

I understand a typical export option recommended by many professionals is to use "analyze in excel" but that will request users to create a pivot table and the connect between excel to Power BI may fail when the original power bi report is modified.

Is there a way to export matrix visual to Excel as is?

Hi @Jeanxyz ,

You could to learn about :Export to Excel improvements for table and matrix visuals .

This is a feature that was scheduled to be released in October, but as of now, it's delayed and not yet available.

Business value

As users explore data in Power BI, many want to continue their analysis in Microsoft Excel. This new feature empowers users who might not have access to edit the report, or who might not be familiar with Power BI authoring capabilities, to pull the data into Excel in a format that's familiar to them. Customers can choose to export data directly from a table or matrix visual so that they can continue their analysis and create their own view of the data.

Feature details

Currently, when data is exported from a Power BI table or matrix (service and Desktop), the structure of the visual is lost in the exported CSV or XLSX file. With this new feature, users will be able to export data from a Power BI table or matrix to Excel and maintain the structure of the visual in cross-tab format. This will reduce the time spent on reformatting data (especially hierarchical data) in Excel.

And I will inform you as soon as there is an official update.

This has been requested since at least 5 years ago but is still not possible.

Supposedly, this is a planned feature in the backlog. See here:
