Web API Data Source Credentials issue in service

Hello, I am having an issue with Data Source Credentials when I publish a report from desktop to service.

I am connecting to a flat-table using instructions provided by the third party website where I am retrieving the data. The third party site (SpheraCloud/thinkstep) is saying that my issue is on the Microsoft side and not the Sphera side.

Basically, I have no trouble connecting to the flat table using their instructions in desktop.

1. Add a "Web" Data Source

2. Connect to the flat table (source url.com/flat-table ID) using "Authorization" and "Bearer {unique bearer token}"

3. Load/transform etc..

4. Close and Apply

When I publish to web I am unable to set up the data source credentials. I have tried every authentication option and every privacy level. I've tried all the variations of my username/password, bearer token, the url, anything I can think of that would work, to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated. I did also try setting this up as a data flow but also could not get past the data source credentials.

Thank you for your prompt reply! @aj1973

Hi @acepuke
Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue:
1. Check the Data Source Settings in Power BI Desktop: Before publishing, go to ‘Home’> ‘Edit Queries’> ‘Data Source Settings'.  Ensure that the credentials are set correctly here and that you're able to refresh the data successfully in Desktop.

2. Use the Correct Authentication Method: When setting up the data source credentials in the Power BI Service, you should use the 'OAuth2' authentication method for bearer tokens. Select 'OAuth2' and then enter the token in the access token field.

3. Verify the Token:  Ensure that the bearer token you are using is still valid and has not expired.  You may need to request a new token from the third-party service if it has expired.

4. Check Dataset Settings in Power BI Service: After publishing, go to the dataset settings in the Power BI Service. Under 'Data source credentials', set the authentication method to 'OAuth2' and paste your bearer token.

Hi @acepuke

you will need a Power BI gateway for certain types of Web connectors. Specifically, if you’re using the Web.Page or Web.BrowserContents connectors, a gateway is required when you publish your report to the Power BI service. This is because these connectors retrieve HTML pages using a browser control, which involves potential security concerns.

However, if your data source is entirely online or cloud-based, you typically won’t need a gateway.

Hello, thank you for your response.

It's saying that I don't need a gateway for this semantic model, because all of its data sources are in the cloud.

All of the tables are mapped to Personal Cloud Connections. However, in an effort to solve the problem, I did try creating a new connection and ran into the same Authentication problem.

Personal cloud connection! Not sure what you mean. Here's a link that might help
