Hi everyone, I hope you all have a nice day.
I want to ask (pictures attached), I gave an example of me using visualisation of "Button Slicer (Top)" and "Slicer (Bottom)" in the picture, I have a table where I have Reporting Date column then I make custom column for the quarters and months. The "Year" in the slicer is from Reporting Date hieararchy (Year), but the quarter and month in the slicer, they both are custom column that I made from the Reporting Date column (so they are not the hieararchy of "Reporting Date").
My questions (I don't mind if you answer with "Slicer" visualisation or "Button Slicer" visualisation):
Please kindly help me answer my questions. Thank you in advance. God bless. 😊🙏

Hi @jollybeaanz
Thank you for being part of the Microsoft Fabric Community.
When you select Q1 in the Quarter slicer, the Month slicer gets filtered automatically to show only January, February, and March, since those months fall under Q1. Even though the Month slicer reflects this filtered state, the values inside it don’t turn black because no direct user selection was made on that slicer. Power BI only highlights items in black when a user manually clicks on a value. This is the expected behavior and not something that can be turned off through settings.
To work around this, one approach is to create two slicers tied to the same date field — one for Quarter and one for Month. Keep the Quarter slicer visible and hide the Month slicer. This way, users make selections using only the Quarter slicer, and the Month slicer still filters visuals in the background without showing any black highlights.
Another method is to build a separate, disconnected Quarter table for the slicer and write DAX logic that filters visuals based on the selected quarter. Since this custom slicer doesn’t interact with the Month slicer directly, you avoid any cross-filtered visuals altogether.
Alternatively, using a hierarchy that includes Year, Quarter, and Month in a single slicer gives users a cleaner experience. Expanding and selecting values within a single hierarchy removes the confusion of separate slicers showing different selection behaviors.
If the above information helps you, please give us a Kudos and marked the Accept as a solution.

Hi @v-csrikanth ,
Thank you so much for replying to my question again — I truly appreciate it. I will try your DAX idea and let you know whether it works for me or not.
Thank you once again.
😊🙏
Hi @jollybeaanz
Thank you for being part of the Microsoft Fabric Community. When you select a Quarter, Month, or Year slicer in Power BI, the other slicers update automatically because they are all connected through the same underlying Date table or related columns. Even if Quarter and Month are custom columns (not part of the original hierarchy), as long as they come from the same date table linked to your data, selecting one filters the others accordingly.
So, selecting Q1 filters the Month slicer to show only Jan, Feb, and Mar as active (black). Selecting a month like August filters the Quarter slicer to highlight the quarter containing August. Selecting a Year filters both Quarter and Month slicers to show only the relevant periods in that year.
This cross-filtering and color change happen automatically due to the relationships and filter propagation in your data model, regardless of whether you use the standard Slicer or Button Slicer visual. Just ensure your Year, Quarter, and Month columns come from the same date table with proper relationships to your fact data.
If the above information helps you, please give us a Kudos and marked the Accept as a solution.

Hi @v-csrikanth , thank you for replying, much appreciated.
I understand how slicer works, however if I select "Quarter (Q1)" slicer only and it turns black and the "Month" slicer is automatically showing "Jan", "Feb", and "Mar" but NOT turning black like the quarter I selected because I dont want to select "Month" slicer, and my question is how do I turn of black color on "Month" slicer even thought I dont select any month from "Month" slicer and only select "Quarter" slicer?
Thank you in advance. Have a nice day. 😊
