Hello Team, I am getting an error message for Usage Metric report for a workspace. The main reason for this password change is required due to a conditional access policy. I am using service account for this and also I have changed password few days ago for this workspace the power bi connection is created by databricks client credential. So my question is where to reset this password can you please help me.
1) Go to connections and gateways
2) Then settings and change your pass
Hi @cengizhanarslan , Thank you for your replay for this usage metric report I have downloaded by service account also the connection created by service account is is online and other reports are working fine for this workspace with scheduled refresh. Currently we are using databricks client credential as authentication with client id and client secrete. My question is as it is telling password change is it for service account or client secrete password. Yeaterday I changed this service account password. Since here is no option for edit credential then where. Also want to know is the cilent secrete password expired in a specif period yes or no.
Hello @ManasRout,
This is an OAuth token refresh failure caused by Conditional Access.
The credential stored in Power BI Service is no longer valid.
Go to:
Workspace → Dataset (Usage Metrics Model) → Settings → Data source credentials → Edit credentials
Re-authenticate the account.
If you are using a service principal, check whether the client secret has expired or if Conditional Access is blocking it.
Hi @Olufemi7 Thank you for your replay as this usage metric report it has no dataset on refresh history is availble since microsoft manages refresh time things as well so I can't able to see data source credential.
Hello @ManasRout,
You’re correct, usage Metrics reports don’t show datasets or data source credentials because Microsoft manages their refresh automatically.
To fix the error: re-authenticate the service account in Power BI so its token is valid. If you’re using a service principal, make sure the client secret is active and that Conditional Access isn’t blocking it. Once the account/token is valid, Microsoft will resume automatic refresh of the report.
Hi @Olufemi7 Thank you for this information but I am using Databricks client credential it is not expired because other reports are working fine and no refresh failure issue only this usage metric report in failing also the connection in power bi service showing as online. Also informing we have a service account I have downloaded this usage metric report by service account also the password I changed on yesterday but where we need to update it. Also the connection is cretaed by service account. Also want to know is the client secrete expired in a specific period yes or no.
Hello @ManasRout,
The Databricks client credential shown in your screenshot is not used by the Usage Metrics report. Usage Metrics runs on Microsoft-managed telemetry data inside Power BI, so it does not depend on your Databricks connection.
Since your other reports are refreshing successfully and the connection shows Online, the Databricks client secret is not the cause.
To answer your question directly: Yes, client secrets always have an expiration period (6, 12, 24 months, or custom). However, if it were expired, your other reports would also fail.
Because only the Usage Metrics report is failing and you recently changed the service account password, this is most likely an authentication token issue for that account. There is no place to manually update credentials for Usage Metrics.
Please sign in directly to Power BI Service using the service account and complete any Conditional Access or MFA prompts. Then wait for the next automatic refresh cycle.
If the issue persists, it may require a Microsoft support ticket since Usage Metrics refresh is system-managed.
