Usage Metric Semantic Model

The Usage Metric Semantic Model for the reports in my Workspace has been deleted. I tried recreating new one by following the link below. But I get the same above error when viewing the semantic model of the newly recreated usage metric report. And the last refresh date is 10/29/2024. Today's date is 1/3/2025. Any ideas to get the usage metric report semantic model and refreshed?

Hi @dogt1225,

The steps you mentioned for creating the Usage Metrics Report are absolutely correct and required. But clicking on Viewing Usage Metrics Report merely creates a report while utilizing any existing Usage Metrics Model in the workspace, that you mentioned is outdated and not refreshing.

Hence, the underlying Usage Metrics Report Model needs to be deleted first, then we would be able to reset and force a new updated usage metrics dataset that refreshes correctly.

To delete the Usage Metrics Model, you can make you use of Power BI Datasets - Delete Dataset In Group API which would help in deleting the dataset by specifying the workspace ID and dataset ID.

I would have mentioned the detailed steps here, but I found a blog that goes through this process in detail, explaining everything step by step - https://dadataguy.medium.com/a-step-by-step-guide-to-resetting-your-power-bi-usage-metrics-dataset-9...

I also followed the same steps to reset the metrics model in my workspace and get it working. Let me know if it works for you!

It seems you need to deploy usage metrics reports manually, there is no other option left once the schedule refresh is stopped due to some internal reason, thanks

Hi,

Since the Fabric issue that occurred in France in August 2025, all usage metrics semantic models have been disconnected from their data sources. Currently, Microsoft no longer allows updating the settings of these models.

The only way to resolve this is to delete the existing usage metrics report and create a new one manually.

To delete it:

  1. Go to the workspace settings.
  2. Open the Storage tab.
  3. Click the trash icon next to the usage metrics report to remove it.

Then, manually create a new usage metrics report. The semantic model will be automatically generated and correctly connected.

Hi @dogt1225,

Generally, if the usage metrics report/ model has been deleted or not refreshing, creating a new usage metrics report for any of the reports in the workspace resets things for me.

Even if the usage metrics report has stopped refreshing due to inactivity and isn't resuming refresh automatically, we delete the usage metrics model and create a new one which fixes things.

  • Have you tried creating a new usage metrics report for any other report in the workspace? Is it working?
  • Hope you have an admin role in the workspace or appropriate permissions on the dataset?

Let me know if it doesn't work, we can try investigating further.

Hi @Bipin-Lala
Thank you for your respone. I am an admin of the workspace. I did try creating a new usage metric report for other reports within the workspace, but they are also not working and all have a last refresh date of 10/29/2024.

Here are the steps I took to recreate a new usage report. Please let me know if I am missing a step:

1.) Within Workspace, I hovered over a report > Select the elipsis (...) > Select "View usage metrics report"

2.) Message appears on the top-right stating usage metrics are ready. I select the green box "View usage metrics.

3.) It brings me to a new page with the Usage Metrics Report, however has a last update date of 10/29/2024. I follow the same steps for other reports within the workspace and results are the same.
