Unable to share default semantic model (option greyed out)

I have an app published on a Pro-level workspace. The one report in this app that is not accessible to my audiences is sourcing its data from the default semantic model of a lakehouse in a Fabric capacity workspace.

- The firm's staff have been assigned report read permissions from the Fabric workspace. (no impact)

- The option to share this default semantic model is greyed out.

- The firm's staff have already been granted Read and ReadAll permissions on the lakehouse. (no impact)

- Granting Viewer permission on the Fabric capacity workspace is the only thing I've found that allows access to the report in the app, but it also exposes the entire Fabric capacity workspace and sensitive assets (Big No-No).

Is there some secret setting to enable sharing the default semantic model? Will sharing the semantic model actually make the app-published reporting visible to my users?

This has been an incredibly frustrating experience and the training material and documentation that I've been able to find has not sufficiently conceptualized this mess of permission management.

Hi @JP_Wisco ,

Provide access to the semantic model which is located on your fabric workspace you don't have to provide access to the workspace.

I hope it will be helpful.

Thanks,

Sai Teja

My problem is that the option to share the semantic model is greyed out (see my initial screenshot) and there doesn't seem to be any way to add new users in the manage permissions window of the semantic model. I can add new users when managing permissions of the lakehouse the semantic model is built on, and I can add new users to the specific report, but I can't find a way to add viewers to the semantic model and those previous permissions haven't provided access to my report users.

I think I need screenshots of someone adding users to a default semantic model because I feel like I'm trying to find my own car keys while they are in my hand. The option to add users from the semantic model manage permissions screen literally doesn't exist for me, and the share model button is inactive and greyed out.

Hi @JP_Wisco ,

You can refer this -

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/service-datasets-manage-access-permissions

What access you have to that workspace or semantic model?

Thanks,

Sai Teja

Edit: Sorry for continuity break, posted from my work account rather than my personal. JP_Wisco and JP_Curious are the same person.

According to the screenshots in the documentation you linked, there should be an "+Add user" button in the upper left-hand corner when I am looking at the Direct access options of the Manage Permissions page. This doesn't exist for me.

I do have the appropriate access level, I am the workspace admin with all permissions granted.

Here is the screenshot from the documentation.
