Unable to Copy Semantic Model or create a Direct Query

Why in the heck does Power BI not allow copying a semantic model in a workspace?

I can only "move" a model.

Does anyone know how this is done? Don't tell me I have to use the API?

I agree with this if possible. Not all models can be downloaded though- here are the limitations:

Power BI doesn’t let you copy semantic models—only move them—because of workspace-bound metadata and lineage constraints. DirectQuery fails if the model’s in My Workspace or has restricted settings.
Workarounds:
- Use PBIP projects to re-upload
- Deploy via Tabular Editor
- Try Semantic Link Labs for Fabric

@hstance

I would just download the original .pbix file from the current workspace, save the file with a new name and then upload it to the target workspace using the Power BI Service portal.

Maybe you should create an idea in forum and ask people to vote:)

Hi @hstance ,

 Here is a way to do it programatically:

https://www.data-nova.io/post/clone-rebind-powerbi-semantic-models

Depending on the type of model, you could possibly download it and then publish a copy.
