Service - Paginated reports error Session Expired

Hello,

When I execute a paginated report in Power BI Service, then switch to another tab and check the result after approximately 15 minutes, I receive an error message stating, "Your session has expired." This forces the entire report to be executed again, which causes inconvenience for our clients.

I am aware of an existing discussion on this issue (Error on Service when using Paginated reports), marked as 'solved.' However, the suggested solution does not work for me and, based on the comments, appears to be ineffective for others as well.

Additionally, the documentation (Why do I get a your session has expired message) states that the session times out after 10 minutes, but does not provide a solution.

That said, is there a way to extend the timeout limit for sessions? If so, how can this be achieved?

AD:
I am aware that the timeout value of the dataset within the paginated report can be configured. However, the query execution itself is not the issue, as it typically completes within 3–4 minutes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

HI @raima ,

As you stated, an "inactive" browser will timeout after 10 minutes.

I found a couple potential workarounds taht you can try.

1. The least likely one in my mind - change the browser settings timeout.  That may not do much though as it is the data, not the browser that is going inactive.

2. Another one that is worth a try is to go to your Power Platform Admin center, go to the Privacy and Security area and then modify Session Expiration and Inactivity Timeout.  That might work.

3. In the report itself, you could set up Automatic Page Refresh.  While that might work to keep the report "active" this might not be a great solution if the report takes a while to render.

I am experiencing the same issue and it is specific to paginated reports. The overall Power BI session doesn't expire, just the report. So, it doesn't require the user to re-authenticate. It just refreshes the page. I don't understand the purpose of this behavior.

My user base is frustrated by the 10 min timeout and having to select all of their parameters again. They are not used to this behavior since PBI reports (non-paginated) do not timeout after 10 mins.

Is this specific to direct query? All of my non-paginated reports use import but the paginated report uses direct query.

We are just going to switch from PowerBI Report Server to PowerBI Service. On the report server this has not been a problem.

On PowerBI Service this also happens to all of our paginated reports - these reports directly query the data source via an ODBC connection.

It is just unfortunate that there is no suitable solution.

Hi @raima ,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum about the issue you are encountering.

As @collinq  mentioned, the session will time out after 10 minutes of inactivity or earlier if the device is locked or becomes inactive. Please follow the workarounds provided by collinq, and do feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance.

Hi @collinq,

I have taken a look at your points. Options 1 and 3 are no option for us.

Regarding point 2, my admin changed the "Idle session timeout" setting in the Microsoft 365 admin center - unfortunately the behaviour did not change.

We will just work with this - it will not break anything it is just a bit annoying.

Many Thanks for your help!

Hi @collinq

Thank you, I will take a look at the workarounds provided. This may take a couple of days because our Admin is currently quite busy.
