Semantic Model is not pulling in new columns added to a sharepoint list when refreshed.

Hello,

I have a sharepint list that I have exported to Bi service online, the refresh on the Semantic model works as it pulls in updated data from the existing columns that have been exported to the model and then into the reports and dashboard.

However when I add a new column to the sharepoint list and refresh the semantic model, it does not pull the new column through into the semantic model and does not appear on the report data table to create report pages with?

Hi @HEW1

I think that you will have to go back to the desktop version of the report and look at the query itself.  The query may only be pulling in certain columns, or it may have a "remove other columns" in the applied steps?  I am not quite sure how you might edit that in the service itself.  But, since it does not error out but does not pull in the field, that is usually the query itself.  (This is a very common issue with Excel when new columns are added.)

Thanks Collinq,

Its not excel I am pulling the data from its a sharepoint list exported straight into the power bi service, its the first time i have seen it happen and I have done this with multiple reports before and updated columns and not had this problem. I also did not use Bi desktop for this.

If I import it into power bi desktop, is there a way to then send it to the bi service so others can see it? Will it then update the data table if I add more columns or will I have to keep importing it to bi desktop? Thanks

Hi @HEW1

Semantic model doesn't take any chamges in the table structure automatically, please update the semantic model from inside by going to semantic model -> open data model -> edit tables and there refresh icon will be there.

Even if not able to pull new columns than remove the table from semantic model and re-add it.

Happy to help!

Hi,

Sorry i have tried to find the edit button but it does not seem to be available unless I am looking in the wrong place, see attached screen shot, I already have reports and a dashboard from this model, I do not want to have to redo the reports if that makes sense. Thanks
