Saved Row Level Security (RLS) keeps being removed

Hello!  I've been using RLS for years now which have been working...until recently. People messaged me suddenly, saying they can't access the report, showing the notif that "The report can't be viewed because the underlying dataset uses row-level security(RLS)".

So when I checked the RLS of one report, I noticed that most saved names for RLS were gone! I checked other reports too with diff RLS, most are all gone! I tried to manually input all names again in the RLS, click save. I go throught each RLS setting for other reports.
I then went back to the first report I saved...most of the names I input were all removed again!

Have anybody experienced that recently?

Hello! I noticed that the user/reader had to log in first in their Power BI account first before I could add them back as member in the RLS settings.

Hi @newgirl

Your RLS issue may stem from one of the following:

  1. Role Changes: Check if workspace roles or user permissions have been modified.
  2. RLS Overwrites: Re-publishing datasets can overwrite RLS set in the Power BI Service. Always define RLS in Power BI Desktop.
  3. Group Changes: AAD group changes or sync issues may have affected RLS users.
  4. Service Bug: Recent Power BI updates might have caused this. Check the Power BI Service status.
  5. Dataset Ownership: Re-publishing by another owner may have overwritten settings.

Fix: Define RLS in Power BI Desktop, publish, and test. If the issue persists, check the activity logs or open a Microsoft support ticket.

Have you recently re-published datasets or made admin-level changes?

Hi @Poojara_D12 ! I just realized realized the terms in my post may have been incorrect. It's the members in the security portion that were being removed even after saving.  But now (after a few hours), I noticed that one of the emails that I kept re-adding in  the security settings this morning was added. But other emails I added along with it still hasn't appeared.

I tried to add again but this time, i couldn't save at all and this error shows up.

As to your comments:

  1. Role Changes: Check if workspace roles or user permissions have been modified. - no change
  2. RLS Overwrites: Re-publishing datasets can overwrite RLS set in the Power BI Service. Always define RLS in Power BI Desktop. - I didn't re-publish a dataset
  3. Group Changes: AAD group changes or sync issues may have affected RLS users. - I'm not sure how to check on this
  4. Service Bug: Recent Power BI updates might have caused this. Check the Power BI Service status. - just checked, no announced issues
  5. Dataset Ownership: Re-publishing by another owner may have overwritten settings. - no re-publishing made

Hi @newgirl

Can you please try the below mentioned steps, If still you face any issues, feel free to message me, we can conclude your issue.

To fix the RLS issue:

  1. Check AAD Group Sync: Ensure Azure AD groups are synced correctly in Power BI.
  2. Verify Permissions: Confirm you have sufficient permissions to modify RLS.
  3. Use Group-Based RLS: Prefer using Azure AD groups over manually adding users.
  4. Clear Cache and Retry: Log out, clear your browser cache, and try again.
  5. Reconfigure in Desktop: If the issue persists, configure RLS in Power BI Desktop and republish the report.
