SQL Server connection: Failed to update data source credentials

Good day,

I receive the "Failed to update data source credentials" when trying to sign into my SQL Server database.
I have tested the credentials in PowerBI Desktop (and the refresh is working fine on desktop) and SSMS and I am able to access the database.

Because of this, I am not able to enable automatic refreshes which is essential for our Reports.

Any thoughts on how to get around solving this?

with a public IP you could avoid the gateway but the SQL Server instance port must be opened as well, maybe it's been closed.

please note having a SQL Server opened on the public internet is not a best practice.

Is it on-prem or cloud database ?

Hello @Cookistador
It is an on-prem database.

Did you set up a gateway ?

If yes, is it a personnal or a standard gateway ?

No, I did not set up a gateway.
I used the SQL Server data source and just entered credentials.
Get Data > SQL Server.

Should I setup a gateway instead? Will this be a better solution for loading the data into PBI?

Hello,

You have to use a gateway to expose your on premise data on the cloud
If you want, you can install a local gateway on your local machine to performed some tests

But for organization, you have to deploy it on a dedicated machine

it's the only solution working.
Power BI service is a cloud application and has no clue about your private network (where your sql server resides).
if you're not the only person in your organization using power bi it's very likely you've already a standard OPDG setup. double check with your IT depo.

Hello @R1k91

We have a public IP set up with our ISP to expose the database. I am able to access it anywhere outside my private network and, it was working just fine until a few days ago.

I will setup the gateway anyway and try to connect like that.

Hi @Chibuye_6 ,
