Power BI import file size limitations

Hey guys,

Does anyone know how to import a pbix file larger than 350MB?

I am using the New-PowerBIReport command and getting the error "New-PowerBIReport : A task was canceled."

New-PowerBIReport -WorkspaceId $workspaceId -Path $pbixFilePath -Name $datasetName -Timeout 240

I've tried setting a higher timeout value, added the workspace to the premium capacity and changed the workspace to use the Large semantic model storage format but still failing.

PowerShell seems to have no trouble with a file 350MB or less. A 400MB file fails and the largest I have is around 920MB.

I am able to upload the file directly into the workspace using the GUI but need to get this working in PowerShell as there are many workspaces\reports to import.

Is it possible to use PowerShell to import files just under 1GB or do I need to get the owner to publish the the dataset without any data - and then refresh the data from the data source?

Thanks,
David

That should give you a 10 GB upload limit PER PARTITION

Hi @daive
Thank you for reaching out microsoft fabric community forum.
It appears that you are experiencing an  issue related to Power BI's file size limitations. Here are a few suggestions to address this:

  • If you're using Power BI Premium, you can enable incremental refresh for large datasets. This allows you to refresh only the data that has changed, rather than the entire dataset.
  •  Ensure that your workspace is set to use the Large data storage format. This setting allows datasets to exceed the 1 GB limit, up to the available RAM of the capacity.
  • Consider splitting your data into smaller chunks and publishing them separately. You can then combine them in Power BI Service.
  •  If possible, use Direct Query instead of Import mode. This can help manage large datasets more efficiently.

After trying the troubleshooting steps mentioned above, if the issue persists, I recommend raising a support ticket as suggested by @lbendlin.
