Power BI embedded analytics and use cases

Hi all

I'm one of those people who's still confused after reading so much about this topic. I'll explain my question/problem and please help me if you can.

We are a relatively small company that has its own software platform and web portal which provide services to customers. The data science team (us) has created some live Power BI reports and published them to Power BI web (service). Now the business likes them and wants to add some of these reports/dashboards to the app/portal then customers can view and get insights.

So, based on my knowledge I considered two options:

1. Use our current software platform and create some visualisation features

2. As this use-case falls under Power BI Embedded analytics with App Owns Data scenario (like this), we can use it and embed our BI content to whatever we want. So, if we go in this direction, we need to pay for A capacities/SKUs . This is where my mind blows. Questions:

- I think overall this is the right solution for us, right?

- It seems to be so expensive, like ~1000 dollars per month, is there any alternative?

- How much dev work do we need to do to be able to add the content, and what features it gives us (like for example, can we control a filter or a visual in a report using things like Power BI API)?

I'd be thankful if someone can help us

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hi @Anonymous ,

With Power BI Embedded analytics you can control the filters and visuals of the report, see the documentation for details.

https://docs.microsoft.com/javascript/api/overview/powerbi/control-report-filters

But if you use embedded analytics, I think you need at least A SKU.

Interesting. Where did the EM SKUs go?

It's $740 per average month.  You control the content via Javascript.

Thanks!

The link is for 2016, I'm sure a whole bunch has been changed since then, I can name a few at least.

Hi,

Instead you can use Report Server. Its a one time cost. Refer the following link for more details

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/get-started

There are few limitations regarding the connectivity to various data sources, but might work for your situation.

Ruchita
