Power BI Workspace Usage Tracking - Tracking Usage When Embedded into PowerPoint?

My team is increasing our tracking for the usage of our workspace. However, we have a lot of users who engage with our reporting / workspace by embedding the reports into PowerPoint (Using Export > Powerpoint > Embed Live Data via the app and/or the PowerPoint add-in for Power BI) and refreshing from there, and we need to understand if their refreshing & usage in PPT is being tracked as part of the overall usage.

Does anyone know if this is the case? If it is not, is there a way to track this usage?

Hello @gmatt98

Currently, usage metrics for Power BI do not natively track interactions with reports embedded into PowerPoint using “Embed Live Data.”

Use Microsoft 365 Audit Logs to track report access. These logs can capture activities like when a report is accessed or refreshed, even if it is embedded externally. However, this requires administrative setup and may not provide granular details about interactions within PowerPoint

Microsoft 365 Audit Logs capture various Power BI activities, such as viewing reports, refreshing datasets, sharing dashboards, and creating or deleting workspaces. These logs are part of the unified audit logging system in Microsoft 365 and can be accessed through the Office 365 Security & Compliance Center or via APIs like the Office 365 Management Activity API

For reports embedded externally (e.g., in PowerPoint or custom applications), the logs can still track activities like report access or refreshes because these actions are tied to the underlying Power BI service.

To enable audit logging for Power BI, administrators must activate it in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Users need appropriate permissions (e.g., Global Admin or Power BI Service Admin roles) to access and query these logs
