Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some help with an issue in Power BI related to automatic data refresh.
Overview of the setup:
The problem? Although I can refresh the report manually via Power BI Desktop without any issues, the automatic refresh in Power BI Service keeps failing.
Error Message Details: The refresh history error message says:
Data source error: DataFormat.Error: The specified package is invalid. The main part is missing. The exception was raised by the IDbCommand interface. Table: Power BISource_Data.
I’ve done some digging and haven’t found a clear solution. One suggestion I came across was that XLSX strict format files might cause issues, but I’ve confirmed that all files are in standard format, so that doesn’t seem to be the problem.
Has anyone run into this before? Any ideas or tips on troubleshooting this further would be greatly appreciated.

I have a colleague that is experiencing this same issue with SharePoint connections. The Power BI Desktop refreshes without error, but the Semantic Model in Power BI service is failing with the same error.
The semantic model in Power BI Service was refreshing without error until October 2024 update.

That's a weird error that I haven't seen before. Scheduled refresh does work with OneDrive sources similar to SharePoint, since it is SharePoint, but you need to enter credentials in the refresh settings in Power BI. I have a tutorial on how to set up the refresh here - this one is for SharePoint, but the concept is the same: https://youtu.be/ba1Akv63GDQ
Make sure that the path you're using in the query for the file source is the cloud path, not the synced local path, assuming you want to avoid using the gateway.
Keep in mind that if you use OneDrive that your source is tied to your account, so if you leave your org it gets deleted. If you need it to keep running long-term, you might consider moving it to a shared site.

I'm fairly sure it's setup correctly because I got it to work initially. This problem occurred at some point after publishing a change to the report via the desktop app. Could it be a problem related to power query or dax?
When I click the refresh button it just spins for a while and then shows a little triangle with the warning message below...

In the Power BI service, My Workspace is your personal workspace, and by default, others cannot access its contents. If you want to share content with others, it's recommended to publish the content to a shared workspace and assign appropriate roles to other users.
Try refreshing after publishing the content to the shared workspace to see if the issue still exists.

The report has been published to a new workspace, which has then been shared with my colleagues to access. To reiterate, refreshing manually via the desktop app and then republishing works fine, it's the auto-refresh function on the Power BI service which is not working. All data sources are online so there shouldn't be a need for a gateway. Thanks.

The files are on my Onedrive account. Isn't a gateway only required if the files are stored offline?
I use a gateway to connect to my online data sources.
