Hi .. some problem.
In PowerBi service i have create da VNET-Datagateway and it works well with some reports.
I create a new Report/Dataset in PowerBi Desktop with a local SQL-Server Database as source.
Works fine an I publish this to PowerBi service.
Now i will change the settings for Dataset so it can access the database behind the VNET-Datagateway.
But when I open Dataset->Settings->Gateway and Cloud Connections,
I see the switch for 'Use an On-premises or VNet data gateway' is set to off and greyed out.
Below is the Message:
We didn't find any suitable data gateways to connect to the data sources that this dataset uses. Either install an on-premises data gateway and add the data sources that this dataset uses to it, or install a data gateway in personal mode to connect this dataset to its data sources.
Am I missing certain rights to use the VNET data gateway for new reports or what is the reason?
Hi @snboris ,
The issue you're facing is due to a mismatch between the data source settings in your Power BI Desktop file and the configuration of your VNet data gateway. Even though you've successfully set up the gateway and it's working with other reports, each dataset must have a data source definition that exactly matches what's configured in the gateway—including server name, database name, and authentication method.
If there's any discrepancy, the service won’t recognize the gateway as a valid option, which is why the “Use an On-premises or VNet data gateway” toggle is greyed out. Additionally, make sure you have the necessary permissions to use the VNet gateway and access its associated data sources—this includes being granted “Use” rights on the gateway or being part of the workspace with the proper roles.
I’d also recommend verifying the gateway and data source settings under “Manage Gateways” in the Power BI Service to ensure everything is correctly configured. If all else fails, try updating the data source in Power BI Desktop to match the gateway setup, then republish the dataset. This often resolves binding issues when the service can't detect a compatible gateway.

Please make sure the database server and database names specified in the dataset match EXACTLY the server address and database name specified in the gateway.
