Overriding Power BI Service Dataset

Hello,

I have downloaded the PBIX file of a dataset and report that were not created by me. The dataset is a mixed model with tables that used Import and DQ. I have only edited and created new measures for visualizations and added these measures to visualizations in the report.

I need to know if overriding both the dataset and the report will cause any issues to both (i.e. dataset settings, report visualizations, etc.). It took a long time to configure the dataset so I don't want anything to go wrong. Could someone please advise? Thanks!

Hi @Anonymous,

Publishing it under a different name is certainly a good idea, as suggested by @Anonymous  and @lbendlin.

Next to that, if you publish a (new or existing) dataset to the service, you have to set the credentials again, either via the gateway or otherwise, depending on the data source(s).

So if you are using a gateway, you need to have access to the gateway connection to be able to do that.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Based on my test, repubilshing the downloaded report to the workspace after modification has no effect on the report and dataset.

If you want to be safe, you can also upload the modified report to other workspaces, keeping the original report and original data set.

Best Regards,

Stephen Tao

Save the PBIX under a different name before you publish it. That way you can compare your version to the old version to decide if all is good or if something broke.
