Hi @hallenstal

When connecting Power BI to an ERP cloud system using ODBC drivers, automatic report refresh depends largely on the data source type and where it is hosted. If your ERP cloud database supports direct cloud connectivity via ODBC and Power BI can reach it over the internet without needing any on-premises connection, then a gateway may not be necessary. Power BI Service can often refresh data directly if the source is fully cloud-based and accessible.

However, in many cases, ODBC connections—especially those involving custom or legacy ERP systems—require an on-premises data gateway because Power BI Service cannot directly connect to ODBC data sources hosted behind firewalls or in private networks. The gateway acts as a bridge between Power BI in the cloud and your ERP’s ODBC data source.

So, if your ERP cloud environment exposes ODBC endpoints publicly and supports authentication compatible with Power BI, you might avoid a gateway. But typically, for ODBC sources, especially if hosted on private networks or requiring secure connections, a Power BI gateway is needed to enable scheduled refreshes and live queries.

In short, whether you need a gateway depends on your ERP cloud’s ODBC accessibility and network setup, but in most ODBC refresh scenarios, a gateway is required for automatic refresh.

Hi @hallenstal ,

You need to talk to the Monitor ERP support team. First, understand how the system stores data in the database. Ask if it's possible to get access to the database/OData feed. Explain what you're trying to achieve — they should be able to provide more details.

Thanks,

Sai Teja
