Having trouble deploying semantic model to Premium XMLA endpoint

I have a semantic model that I developed using Visual Studio. It's been working for some time on Azure Analysis Services.  Now I'm trying to deploy this to a Power BI premium workspace and am having problems.

First I get this error:

The operation is only supported on model with property 'DefaultPowerBIDataSourceVersion' set to 'PowerBI_V3' in PowerBI Premium.
Technical Details:

So I added these properties to the model.bim file.

"defaultPowerBIDataSourceVersion": "powerBI_V3",
"discourageImplicitMeasures": true,

But now I can't even open or build the model in VS. I get this error:

An error occurred while opening the model on the workspace database. Reason: Failed to save modifications to the server. Error returned: 'Power BI datasets using M based data source format are only supported in Power BI services.

Does anyone know how I can get this working?  I've done this before with no problems.  But I'm not sure if some compatibilty requirements have changed.

I also tried build a brand new model using the m queries (I much prefer just using the old method where I can simply drop in the sql, why is MS trying to remove this???) and I still have problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Clayton

Thank you.  I'm not sure what I did, but I get it working!   Which I'm very happy about because PBI Desktop and Tabular editor are inferior to VS in developing and managing these models. I don't want any of that power query m garbage. I just want simple SQL based partitions and to use the VS SSDT tools.  So at least for now I can keep using them.

Hi @clayduvall

Currently is not possible to use in azure analysis services modelling within premium . It fundamentally uses different architecture in the background. What I can suggest doing is to deploy it to add analysis services and then use the migration tool from the Power BI tool to migrate it across.

Wow!  I didn't see that anywhere.   I've been using VS SSDT for over 10 years now to build these models and deploying to Analysis Services then AAS and to PBI premium for the last two years. Now I just can't do this anymore??  That's nuts.  PBI Desktop is for inferior to VS in developing these models and Tabular Edit has a monthly charge.  I'd love to see an official notice somewhere about this.

Hi @clayduvall

As far as I am aware, I have not seen any additional support for using visual studio for Power BI premium. I know that this was officially last supported for Azure Analysis Services. Here are the details that I can find Development tools for Tabular models in 2021 - SQLBI

I appreciate your response.  Perhaps I didn't phrase things correctly.  I just built a new model in Visual Studio 2022 and I'm trying to deploy it to Power BI premium.  This isn't an old semantic model.   I keep getting those two errors above.  I used Visual studio last year to do exactly the same thing deploying to a PBI premium workspace with the XMLA endpoint.  But now I cannot.  I'm wondering of building models in VS is even supported anymore when deploying to PBI Premium.

Hi @clayduvall

As far as I know, it is no longer supported as all models using Visual Studio. You have to create them either using Tabular editor or Power BI Desktop
