Hi, I'm the Power BI Admin of a large organization.
Since this week I can't make new DataGateway connections to SQL Server Databases and Analysis Services using our service accounts.
We've been succesfully making connections for almost a year now.
The existing connections are still working.
Using my personal account, I can also make new working connections.
With the service accounts I cannot make new connections.
So far we've:
- restarted, reinstalled, updated and diagnosed the DataGateways
- AIM checked the accounts: they are still active and nothing changed (like a password for example)
- Database owners checked the databases: the accounts have reading rights on the databases
The following error statement pops up when trying to make a new connection:
error
Anyone know what to do?
Hi @SokuTaIke ,
what are "service accounts" in your case?
It sounds like a permissions issue for your service accounts. Do they have permissions to create new connections in your tenant, since you are able to create connections with your personal account?
What happens when you create a working connection with your personal account and give permissions to use these conncetion to "service accounts"?
Regards
Hi @sergej_og
Service accounts are identities in the on premise active directory of my organization. These accounts aren't tied to a person and the password is static (no periodical mandatory password change). We use these accounts to make connections to databases in our reports, so when the creator of the report stops working for our organization and their account gets deleted or if they change their password, the report keeps working.
We make the DataGateway connections via our personal account with the credentials of the service accounts. That's why service accounts don't have permissions to 'create' datagateway connections in Power BI service. It is not desireable to use my own credentials in these connections (because of the scenario above). The service accounts do not need to use the connection either since they wil not read reports. They are only used as a key to be able to be able to connect to the database via the datagateway.
Hi @SokuTaIke
Could you have a look at this blog post as it appears you might need to create the cloud connections in the Power BI Service to your SSAS connections?
Hi @GilbertQ
When I open the dataset settings I do not get the option of creating a cloud connection, only a DataGateway connection. Perhaps because our SSAS en SQL Servers are running on premise.
Check out the November 2025 Power BI update to learn about new features.
