Formatting issues when switching between Power BI Service and Desktop

Hello everyone!

I'm experiencing a problem when working with Power BI inthe cloud (Power BI Service) and then downloading the report to edit it in Power BI Desktop. Many of the chart formats (colors, sizes, etc) get messed up, and thesame happens the other way around (when I create something in Desktop and then view it in the cloud).

Question:

  • What could be causing these formating inconsistences  between Power BI Service and Power bi Desktop?
  • Are there any best practice or settings I should review to prevent these unexpected changes in charts and other visual configuration?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @Anonymous,

We sincerely appreciate your inquiry through the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

  1. The issue arises due to differences in how Power BI manages formatting across the Desktop and Service environments. Applying direct formatting to visuals may cause more discrepancies compared to using report themes. Themes ensure a consistent format that is maintained across different environments.
  2. Power BI Service renders visuals slightly differently than Power BI Desktop, which may result in minor visual discrepancies, particularly with font sizes, spacing, and the positioning of certain chart elements.
  3. The Power BI Service might display cached versions of the report, reflecting older formatting. Making a minor edit to the report in the Service and saving it will force a refresh, resolving this issue.
  4. Please ensure that you are using the latest version of Power BI Desktop. The Power BI Service receives regular updates, and some formatting issues are addressed in these updates.

What about Power BI Service don't have the same formatting options for some visuals, leading to serious discrepancies between objects in Power BI Destkop and Power BI Service like this:

You can clearly see that my object in Power BI Desktop cannot be deployed in Power BI Service due to this discrepance. I have the latest version, so, the problem is in the Power BI Service site!

Long standing bug in the service when your defined color patterns are ignored.  Use themes, and "touch" the report in the service.
