Error while scheduled refreshing

Hi All,

I am using postgresql db and the dataset size is in millions. We have published the report and scheduled for data refresh on all saturdays.

The automatic refresh fails all the time, throwing error as

"Exception while reading from stream" for a particular table (The table with highest row count in the dataset).

But if we do manual refresh it works perfectly. Any ideas on why this is happening?

I got a similiar thread - https://community.powerbi.com/t5/Desktop/Postgresql-Exception-while-reading-from-stream/m-p/238272#M...

My understanding is that, If this is what i am facing then it shouldn't work on manual refresh also. But manual refresh works well.
Can anyone help?

Hi @AishwariyaV ,

As the official document said:

I would suggest you restart the gateway/service, upgrade the Powe BI Desktop to the latest version to check if the issue persists.

In addition, I also foung a similar issues have been submitted internally. Here is the ICM code——220098613. Any progress will be updated in time.

Hey @AishwariyaV ,

where is the postgresql server? On premises or in the cloud?

If on premises did you set up the gateway properly? If in the cloud where exactly (Azure, AWS, VM)?

If you need any help please let me know.
If I answered your question I would be happy if you could mark my post as a solution ✔️ and give it a thumbs up 👍

Hi @selimovd ,

The postgresql is in AWS.

Hey @AishwariyaV ,

did you set up the AWS environment like it's recommended from Amazon for Power BI Service?

Check the following whitepaper from page 14 on ("Connecting the Microsoft Power BI service to
AWS data sources"):

https://d1.awsstatic.com/whitepapers/using-microsoft-power-bi-with-aws.pdf

If you need any help please let me know.

Hi @selimovd ,

I am not sure in which server the gateway resides, but then if there is something wrong with the setup, it shouldn't work on manual refresh also right?

Hey @AishwariyaV ,

not necessarily. If you connect with PBI Desktop your notebook connects directly to a server in the AWS cloud without any gateway. That can easily work.

But if you schedule a refresh in PBI Service, the Microsoft cloud (=Power BI Service) has to connect to the AWS cloud with a gateway. This is technically more complicated. So you should follow best practice and set it up like Amazon recommends. Believe me, there is a purpose behind the white paper 😉
