I downloaded a report (PBIX file) from the Power BI service to make a few changes but when I opened the report in Power BI Desktop, all my datasource connections and datasets have dissappeared!
In the report view, I can see the data, yet when I click on Transform data, I have 0 queries.
When I click on datasource settings -> Datasources in this file, it says "We didn't find any datasources in this file".
I do not understand what could have happened, or how to solve this, short of starting over from scratch?
Of the 5 reports in this workspace (all connecting to a dataflow (legacy)), only 1 report still has the datasource connections remaining when I download the pbix files.
Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I had the same issue. Using the Help and Support experience available via the Power BI Admin Portal, I found an article that provided the answer. Try downloading the Semantic Model from the Power BI Service using an incognito / inprivate browser session. That worked for me. There is a problem with the Power BI cached that is causing the issue ... by downloading the content from the service via an incognito/inprivate browser session, the issue in the cache is circumvented.
hth!
Hi, @Dawn_M
Based on your description, I downloaded the PBIX file from the Power BI Service and opened it in Power BI and Power Query and didn't come across the same situation as you. Here are the test results:
When I open it in the Data source setting in Power query, I can also find the original data source connection:
When I download PBIX from another workspace, I can also view the data and queries in Power Query, as shown in the image below:
You can re-download your report that doesn't have a data source, or clear the cache in Power BI Desktop.

Hi Jianpeng,
Thank you for your reply... if only it was this simple.
A couple of additional notes. These reports were published over a year ago and simply refreshed over time with no issues. It is only now, over a year later that I am now downloading them to add a field to the semantic model for a report that we are seeing this disconnection from the report and the datasource.
Could it be the changes to the Power BI Service over time? I know we have had to make changes to the way the gateways work over the last few years due to Microsoft updates....I am wondering if maybe one of those updates "broke" the link?
Would anyone know of a way to restore the connection to the datasources? Is my only real solution here to start from scratch?
exact same situation for me. my semantic model has 32 tables ... rebuild from scratch is NOT an option!
