DirectQuery in PBIP/PBIR files?

Hello,

We are looking into utilising Azure DevOps for our PBI reports, and I am trying to work out whether it is possible for reports using DirectQuery to PBI semantic models to be edited this way as PBIP/PBIR files?

When you initially save a PBIX file as PBIP, it seems that the byConnection settings are populated, and the PBIP file can be opened using DirectQuery. However, when syncing from a workspace > git, this seems to be overwritten with byPath, which then opens the semantic model.

We have several reports with an separated data model because they cannot be opened locally due to firewalled access to the data.

Is there a setting or otherwise functionality to allow PBIP/PBIR files to open using the byConnection settings which seem to be present?

Cheers!
