Difference Between Local and Shared Datasets in Power BI?"

As a bigner i am confused about a bunch of question
1- what is semantic model in powerbi?
2- what is the term data set refers in powerbi ? is it simple data with tables or the data that we includes tables + relationships+measures ??
3- How to create a data set in powerbi ? what does this mean ?  like we always have a data source from where we import data into powerBi . then what does this mean "How to create a data set in powerbi"
what is tye difference between shared and local data sets??

Answer below

1- what is semantic model in powerbi?

It is the set of tables, relationships, measures, calculated colums, calculated tables and security roles
2- what is the term data set refers in powerbi ? is it simple data with tables or the data that we includes tables + relationships+measures ??

Dataset is the old name of Semantic Model
3- How to create a data set in powerbi ? what does this mean ?  like we always have a data source from where we import data into powerBi . then what does this mean "How to create a data set in powerbi"

To create a Semantic Model, import some data from your data source in Power BI Desktop and build relationships, measures, calculated colums, calculated tables and security roles

what is tye difference between shared and local data sets??

I am not sure about the terminology you use but a Sematic Model, once published to Power BI Cloud (Service) can be shared so that other users can read the reports connected to the Semantic Model and/or create their own report based on that Semantic Model

Hi @waleedjaved1 ,

Here’s a quick breakdown:

1. Semantic model: This is the “brain” of your Power BI report—where all your tables, relationships, and measures live.

2. Dataset: A dataset in Power BI is the same thing as a semantic model. It’s the full set of tables, relationships, and calculations you use for analysis.

3. Creating a dataset: You build a dataset in Power BI Desktop by importing data and setting up your model. When you publish to the Power BI Service, the dataset is uploaded as well.

4. Local vs Shared Datasets: Local dataset: Only in your PBIX file, for your use in Power BI Desktop Shared dataset: Once you publish, others can connect to and reuse that dataset for their own reports in the Power BI Service.

Local datasets are just for you in Desktop; shared datasets are published and reusable in the Service.
