Refreshing a report in the Service after making changes in desktop

Hi,

I have a report which sources data from Business Central API's and its currently refreshing without issues in the service. However i need to make a small amendment to one of the queries. I have tried making the change in desktop and then refreshing but the refresh keeps failing, which i think is due to a timeout error in one of the API's.

Is there a way to make the change in desktop, but not refresh in desktop and only refresh when uploaded to the Service ?

thanks

Scott

Hello @PaisleyPrince,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Forum Community.

To make changes in Power BI Desktop without refreshing the data there and only refresh after uploading to the Power BI Service, you can follow these steps:

  • Open your report in Power BI Desktop and make the necessary changes to the query in Power Query Editor.
  • Avoid triggering a refresh by not clicking "Apply & Close" or "Refresh Preview" while editing. Instead, save the file (File > Save) after changes.
  • To minimize automatic evaluations, set the "Maximum number of simultaneous evaluations" to 1 under File >> Options and Settings >> Options >> Data Load >> Parallel loading of tables. This force queries to evaluate one-by-one and check the "Maximum memory used per simultaneous evaluation" is adequate for your queries.
  • Save the .pbix file and click Publish to upload the updated report and dataset to the Power BI Service. This will not trigger a refresh in Desktop.
  • In the Power BI Service, go to the dataset settings, ensure the Business Central API credentials are correctly configured under Data source credentials, and trigger a manual refresh or rely on your scheduled refresh.

If the timeout error continues, please check the refresh history in the Power BI Service for detailed error messages and share them here. This will help us provide more targeted assistance.
