Data Source Setting

Hi All

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the path in the Windows Authentication screen in Settings -> DataSets, in PBI Service ?

When I go in there, the path is greyed out, so I can't change it. If the path it can't be changed here, is there any other way of changing it somewhere else, once a PBI Desktop model has been loaded ?

Regards

Paul

Hi @Paulx99,

Once we publish the .PBIX file to Power BI Service, the data source used in this report is fixed, and we are not able to change it in service. You can image the data source is used to retrieve report data, if we change the data source, we need to edit corresponding dataset query to retrieve data. But Power BI Service is different from the Power BI Desktop, it doesn't provide feature for us to change data source or dataset query of existing report.

So in your scenario, once you publish the report to Power BI Service, we are not able to change the path which you want in service.

If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

Hi Qiuyun Yu

Thanks for your thoughts and insights on this issue.

For my purposes, I do not want the data source used in reports to be fixed. As such, I need the ability to be able to change the data source for reports in Services. To not be able to do this is a major limitation as far as I'm concerned. If it was possible to change the data source in Service, I would have no problem with editing the corresponding dataset query to retrieve the data.

I know from other posts I have read that I am not the only one who would like to be able to change the data source in Service. Just because Service does not currently provide a feature to change the data source or dataset of an existing query, does not mean that it cannot be done. If this has not already been suggested as an enhancement, I will suggest it. If it has been suggested already, I will vote for it. It makes no sense to me to not have the option to change the data source for reports in Services as and when required.

Kind Regards

Hi @Paulx99,

I found an idea which is you want already requested by another communities. See: Personal Gateway Dataset Editing. You can vote and comment on it, so that PG team will consider how to improve it.

Hi Qiuyun Yu

THANK YOU for bringing the link below to my atttention. This is exactly what I am talking about. I will definately vote for it and will also comment on it. I hope someone from the Power BI Development Team reads this also refers to the link you have provided below and the comments that I and other users have provided on this very important issue. What I owuld like to kinow is why would MS allow the datsource in Desktop to be changed, but not allow the datsource in Service to changed ? That makes no sense to me.

Kind Regards

Paul

Hi @Paulx99,

I also already voted on this idea item. Regarding the question why "not allow the datsource in Service to changed", I think only PG team can answer this question. If you can't wait to know the answer, I would suggest you create a support ticket to Microsoft. Smiley Happy

@Paulx99 that path is to your data source that you've connected to. So you can't change it in power bi service for published dataset from desktop. But you can certainly change that in power bi desktop via query editor either through clicking on settings icon next Source or selecting your query and right click Advanced Editor.

Thanks again for your reply.

I understand that. However, changing the datsource path in Power BI Service is exactly what I want to do, once the dataset has been published from PBI Desktop. I'm familiar with how to do that in PBI Desktop, but that is not what I want to do here.
