Data Refresh error: "DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError"

I've been experiencing an intermittent data refresh issue with the Power Bi Service semantic data model with the following error code: "DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError".

No change has occurred to the data model or underlying Azure Sql database prior to this issue starting to appear intermittently.

Things I've tried:

- checking that the data connector is set to "Organizational" level of access

- updating the data connector to see if that reset things

- updating the processing power of the back-end Azure SQL database

Any help is appreciated.  It's only been happening recently but has been ticking along happily for over 6 months prior to this.

Thanks in advance.

I'm already connected to Azure SQL and have been for about 12 months now.  The on-premise database that uses the gateway, that it used to be connected to 12 months ago, is not used at all in the reports.

Hi, did you find a solution for this?

we're also experiencing the same situation since last Mondeay (13th Jan 2025)  At first we've thought it had to do with a shared folder hosting a couple of XLS spreadsheets because all error messages were pointing in that direction but we received on thursday the same error messaged signiling out a table on an azure sql server.

We also receive the error message on Semantic models which are solely depent on XLS spreadsheets (no sql involved).

Has anything changed on the PBI Service Side?

I'm still looking for the solution.  Nothing has changed on the Power BI Service side ... that I know of.  I'm the only person maintaining the Power BI reports so I can also be confident nothing has changed on the reports.

I've asked the relevant people to check the on-premise gateway server/s and let me know if anything has changed...... having said this, the Power BI reports are not connected to the gateway database for about 12 months and have been working fine on the Azure SQL database that whole time until this intermittent data refresh failure started.

Same problem, connection is good to the sql server , but one table always errors out.
I re-published  and then it works on a manual refresh, but then the automated refresh always fails on the one query/table. This just started since last friday.

Report works fine from powerbi desktop and refreshes with no errors.

it's like something structure wise has been buffered/stored in the semantic model
and it can't fix the problem and I can't see what the problem is either

It would be really good to get a Microsoft person to let us know why this is happening - the reason why it started in the first place.  This might help explain why it's all fixed for me but still happening for others.

My current guess is that it's related to the gateway version installed on the cloud servers for Azure SQL.... but this is a total guess with the error message given and the lack of any official information on why the issue occurred.
