Cannot update the connection references in Power BI APP

Dear user,

My session ID = fad6dcf4-c6de-4721-b238-925651ae590f.

I have two types of connection types. One is an SQL Server, which works fine and a Excel file which is in the documents of my business  account.

In the Power BI App -> Settings for semantic model -> "Manage connections and gateways" -> I can't set the verification method on "OAuth2", which I normally use for the Excel files.

I only have the choice to select "Windows" and when I log in with my Windows account, it does not work. I get the notification "Cannot update the connection references" and "Cannot make a connection with the datasource".
The pad which I use is directly linked with the Excel file in my documents map.

I would really appreciate some help from Microsoft.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

What is the source type for the Excel file?

If the Excel file is stored in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint, it must:

  • Be referenced with a web-based URL (starting with https://).
  • Use OAuth2 for authentication (your organizational login).
  • Appear in Power BI under “Web” or “SharePoint Folder” as the source type.

If you reference your excel file using a local or mapped path then Power BI will require an on-premise data gateway, and only windows authentication will be available which will fail if you don’t have a gateway set up.

The source was a local map, but I transformed and replaced it to a OneDrive map as a file and then referenced the web-based URL.

Now it works perfect.

Thank you for the reminder of using the OneDrive!

I wish you a great day!
