Backend Error: Dataflow auto-rebind failure.

I'm having problems with using the new Gen 2 dataflows and deploying them. I have a Gen 2 dataflow that feeds a semantic model and its subsequent report. The report and dataflow run fine in our development workspace, but when deploying those 3 items to a testing workspace using power bi deployment pipelines, I receive this error: "When deploying the items below, any related dataflow must be included in the deployment or must already exist in the target folder." with a reference to the Gen 2 dataflow id that is feeding my report.

Anyone else have this problem? The last time I tried this, I had to replace the Gen 2 dataflow with a Gen 1 for it to work.

Here is the error:

Hi @noahadmcdonald,

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

It looks like you are experiencing a known current limitation when using Deployment Pipelines with Dataflow Gen2 in Microsoft Fabric. You are able to deploy the Gen2 dataflow by itself, the deployment of the semantic model and report fails because the pipeline cannot auto-rebind them to the Dataflow Gen2 source in the target workspace. Currently, Deployment Pipelines do not support automatic rebinding for Gen2 dataflows in the same way they do for Gen1 dataflows or other traditional sources.

I recommend to go through following steps :

* Deploy the Gen2 Dataflow separately first to the target (test) workspace.

* Then in the target workspace, confirm that the Gen2 dataflow is present and properly configured.

* Then, manually rebind the semantic model to the new dataflow (typically via Power BI Desktop by updating the data source or using REST API if preferred).

* Now publish the updated semantic model and associated report to the test workspace.

Once that rebinding is complete, the report should function correctly with the newly deployed dataflow in the target environment.

Hi @noahadmcdonald

I am experiencing the same error on the same setup (3x Dataflow Gen2 CI/CD preview, feeding into 1x semantic model, which feeds into a Power BI report). See error details below:

Backend Error: Dataflow auto-rebind failure (source Dataflow(s):9be600ec-0e39-411e-819b-1030ad821c18,5c48d302-fef5-4f24-b7ce-d4f6fd741900,f1998cba-63d3-4c1f-969f-bd13594263ae)

Would highly appreciate any help with finding a solution to this.

Hi @noahadmcdonald

What happens when you go into your test app workspace? Can you see the dataflow gen 2 and if you have to go into it, can you make sure that it has all the connection details defined as expected?

Hey there,

The dataflow gen 2 can deploy when selected by itself. I can't deploy the semantic model (and report) at all while using the gen 2 dataflow to feed it. This doesn't register as a failed deployment in the deployment history for the pipeline so there isn't more info I can see about the error.

^This is the lineage in the development space. I select the items in blue for deployment, since I want them to auto-bind.
