Hi Team,
I have below set up for my Power BI reports.
All the reports have live connection to cubes present in Azure Analysis server. Cube data is refreshed from Azure SQl Database tables. Now the customer is asking for below option,
Instead of Azure Analysis Server, if we can use internal PowerBI storage , define or import the existing data model , measures, all other calculation from cube to Power BI report and then schedule daily refresh.
They just want to bypass AAS server and directly access report within PBI with direct connection to Azure SQL database.
Please let me know if this feasible. What are Pros/Cons . What would be the approach to achieve the change.
Thanks in advance
Hi @Anonymous
You would create a Role in Power BI Desktop and for the Customer Role, you would put in the same DAX filter criteria.
Hi @Anonymous
Further to @AbhiSSRS comments, this can be done.
You can only deploy to the XMLA Endpoint if you are using PBI Premium or Premium Per user
Otherwise you could create a new PBIX file and then copy across all the measures and tables using Tabular Editor.
Also make sure that if you are using Power bI Pro that your PBIX file size does not exceed the 1GB limitations for Pro.
Thanks @AbhiSSRS & @GilbertQ
for those details.
I have one more query how do i implement RLS in the new PBI report set up.
Right now all the existing PBI reports are accessed through embedded application and User Login Id is passed as a filter to Tabular cube.
How do i implement the same if i deploy datamodel & report in PBI datastore.
Please let me know what would be best approach .
This is perfectly feasible! The advantage is higher performance as both pix and Cube reside on same capacity (in case of Premium)
There is no issue in migration and its seamless with couple of steps. You may deploy from VS directly to Power BI with XMLA Endpoint connectivity and Power BI Connection String from the workspace. Please refer to the below link for the steps! You may need to change compatibilty level on bim.
Please mark as solution if this is ok!
