Analyze in Excel and Excel On Line - Issue

Good evening,

I've created a pivot table with Analyze in Excel from PowerBI and I correctly navigate it from my Excel Desktop. Now I'm trying to upload it to an O365 Group (One Drive for Business).

If I open the file directly from the Group folder in O365, it tries to open it throught Excel On Line (that is something I would really like for my user experience) but when i try to update data from Power BI or when I try to use a Slicer I get an Error (External Data Refresh Failed).

I can add that choosing to open the file form O365 with Excel Desktop leads me back to a perfectly working situation.

Can you confirm me that is not possible at this time to refresh a Power BI connection in Excel On Line? I'm missing something?

Thanks a lot,

Edo

Hi @odraode83,

We can view the workbook created from the Analyze in Excel feature in Excel online, but we can't refresh the connection to get updated data in Excel online. We can only see the updated data in this kind of workbook in Excel application.

Thanks @v-qiuyu-msft!

And when you say that we can view from excel on line you mean only a static view, is it correct? So, I can't for example use a slicer because this is the same than refreshing data from the connection. Right?

Again, thanks a lot!

Hi @odraode83,

As the workbook is connecting to a dataset in Power BI, while refresh for external connections is not supported in Excel Online, it’s recommended that users open the workbook in the desktop version of Excel on their computer to get updated data. For more information, see: Analyze in Excel.

Hi @v-qiuyu-msft,

thanks a lot! So no way at the moment to browse the model via excel on line at the moment. Correct?
