AWS PostgreSQL Schema and PBI Gateway & Dev options (Not using EC2)

Good day,

I am on my 3rd design for my area, i have shifted from Redshift to PosgreSQL as the roadmap is mostly native aws + serverless.

I currenlty have an EC2 "very small" for an gateway and small dev only

1. I would like to make away with the gateway connecting & publishing from my pbi desktop to AWS PostgreSQL

2. How can i move to azure or remove the gateway for aws postgresql database?

I had this noted last time when i was researching Redshift "Due to VPC PowerBI Gateway is needed. Only MS related cloud services does not require On-Prem Gateway" but my leader has questioned the EC2 and wondering how the VPC would work if it was narrowed down or other options with AWS PostgreSQL via Azure PBI Gateway?

Please help

Hi, @icassiem

You mentioned removing the connection and release gateway from Power BI Desktop to AWS PostgreSQL. You need to make your PostgreSQL accessible to Power BI, for example by releasing specific ports. Make sure the PostgreSQL instance is configured to accept connections from outside the VPC. Then use the PostgreSQL database database in Power BI desktop.

You mentioned migrating AWS RDS PostgreSQL offline to Azure Database for PostgreSQL, you can refer to the official documentation below:

If you want to migrate to an Azure virtual gateway, you may need to create a virtual gateway in Azure, which you then use in Power BI Service to create a data connection.

Thank You @Anonymous

The PostgreSQL option is our primary focus, if the PostgreSQL instance is configured to accept connections from outside the VPC, how would the PBI service connect to the postgresql?

would it not require a pbi gateway or would i need to setyp a pbi service gateway directly to PostgreSQL?

Hi, @icassiem

Thank you for your reply. You can connect to your PostgreSQL in Power BI Service in two ways. The first one is to connect by using Power BI enterprise gateway, and the second one is to connect by cloud. You can try both connection methods.
