Hi to all,
Where I work we are currently using the January 2020 version of PBIRS and we want to upgrade to a newer version. We have the SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance edition. I tried to upgrade following the steps described in this link (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/upgrade) using the October 2020 installation file but encountered an error in the process. Here is an extraction of the installation log file:

What might be the problem with the installation? Is this the right way to do it given that we have the PBIRS SQL Server Enterprise with Software Assurance edition?
Thanks in advance, best regards.
Have you tried to reboot the system before installation?

Hi @FarhanAhmed ,
No I didn't. What I did before executing the installer was to stop the PBIRS and SQL Server services.
The installation never asked me if I wanted to reboot, neither before nor after.
Hi, @Anonymous
It’s my pleasure to answer for you.
You can follow the detailed link:My Tech Learning: Tutorial -- Steps to upgrade Power BI Report Server
By the way, Was the previous version installed using SA product key?
Did the error occur at this step?
If it doesn’t solve your problem, please feel free to ask me.

Hi Janey,
Thanks for your help. An error message popped up briefly after the step shown in the image and then proceeded to install Power BI Report Server but ultimately failed.
I'm not sure if previous version was installed using SA product key, but if I had to guess I'd probably say yes. What difference does it make if an SA product key was used when installing the previous version? Maybe the installation could have succeeded?
Best regards.
Hi, @Anonymous
If you installed the keyless version before, the updated version should also be the keyless version. It’s not easy to judge the problem. Can the original version work normally?
Have you tried to update again? Have you made a backup? Do you remember whether it showed up for you to fill in the key when updating?
Is the update interface like this?

Hi Janey,
The update interface looked like this:
The update process never asked me to put the product key in. I made a backup of the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB and the virtual machine that contains the Report Server Installation, but I haven't tried to update again.
The current version works fine, but the developers that are currently working with PowerBI want the last available version.
Best regards.
Hi, @Anonymous
Can you find setup logs? It seems that the package installation failed, other reasons are not obvious, please download again here.
You can check if the installation requirements are met:
