This is very odd. So I have an existing dashbaord which I spent alot of time creating. The datasource has changed now its on a Analysis Services. I am trying to add the connection and force the dashboards to work in the new connection setting. When I open up a new dashboard with nothing built it changes from Direct Query to Connect Live. The problem is that when the direct query is selcted where the dashboard exists it is not supported and when I click on Import it takes forever. I want it to be like in the case in live connection. Why is this happening? Why I cant add this connection to my existing dashboard with a live connection?
Hi @wherdzik
I understand your situation. You want to connect to a cube in Power BI, but you see different options depending on whether you're opening an existing pbix file or starting a new file.
When opening an existing pbix file (from describetion it is in import mode at this point), you can only add data sources using import or direct query mode (mixed mode/composite models) at this point, which is why you only see import and direct query connection mode options (It's by design.). The new file opened is an empty model that can be connected to the Analysis Service using LiveConnection or Import mode. Almost all of the modeling in this schema (except for report-level measure) is done in the data source, so when your original model has tables in the import schema, it will not display them.
Unfortunately, at the moment there is no way to switch the connection mode from the import mode to the live connection mode, you are welcome to submit this idea. To switch to a Live Connection, you will need to recreate the report.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best Regards,
Gao

I dont think I am explaing that correctly. Essentially I am saying that when I open up my desktop version of Power BI and I open up my dashboards that I built with a connection to an excel file to which I want to change since the data source is now in a cube. When I select Get Data and and then select Analysis Services so I can enter in the servier name the options I have are Import and Direct query. I want to be able to connect to the cube, these options do now allow me to connect to that because for one it does not support Direct query and two I dont want to Import the data. Just a cube connection is what I need.
Now when I try to do the exact same thing but a brand new desktop session of the desktop version of Power Bi I get totally different options when I select Get Data and Analysis Services. The options that appear is Import and Connect Live. When I select the Connect Live it brings in the cube with all the dimensions and data along with it. But I dont want to do it in a blank dashbaords. I want to open up the existing dashboard I built and just add the analysis services connection along with the live connection except that does not exist.
I am opening up the same desktop version but the only difference is I open up my exisitng built dashboard to which I just want to add a data connection. Why wont it allow me to do the live connection. Does that make sense?
That is the connection for importing using a DAX query.
Also, when you say "dashboard" you mean report right? A dashboard in Power BI is very different.
To connect via a live connection, open a new blank report, the OneLake Hub, Power BI Detaset.
If you have an existing report you want to change to this, if it is Live, just use the Transform Data button:
It will then show you all semantic models you have access to.
If it is a report you want to convert to live connection, you need to go into Power Query and delete everything and close and apply. then delete any calculated tables, field parameters, or anything else still showing in the data pane. That needs to be empty. Your report will go 100% gray. That is fine.
Use the transform button above, connect to the model you want, and the visuals should refresh in a few seconds.
DAX is for Analysis. Power Query is for Data Modeling
