Converting Text to Date whilst processing for visualisation

Hi I hope someone can help as I have spent way too long trying to work out how to fix this.  When trying to use the Vizualisations tool I get this error message:

Shirley101_0-1741686982457.png

I have looked at previous messages and made sure all the columns are set to DATE.  I am using UK date formats converted from a US data file so I don't know if that has something to do with it.  I've also added an additional Month column but that doesn't fix the issue either.

thanks Shirley101

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hi @Shirley101,

To address the issue, please follow these steps:

First, convert the text-based month names into recognizable date values by creating a new column. Append a day and year to the month name to form a complete date (e.g., "01 January 2025"). Set the data type of this new column to Date to ensure proper recognition.

Next, update your visualizations and relationships to use this new date column instead of the original text-based month column. This will resolve the error and ensure your visual functions correctly.

Please Accept as solution if this meets your needs and a Kudos would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi @Shirley101,

Thanks for using Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

To resolve the date formatting issues you're facing in Power BI, particularly when converting dates from US to UK formats, here are some resources that offer detailed guidance:

Within Power BI, navigate to the Model view or the Data view and check the data type assigned to your date columns. Ensure they are formatted as Date and not Text.
Since you are working with UK formats (dd/MM/yyyy) converted from US formats (MM/dd/yyyy), ensure your computer's locale settings are also configured to match the desired format (UK).
After applying these changes, confirm that there are no null or incorrectly parsed values and that visualizations function as expected.
