Connect live SQL Server Analysis Services

Hi,

I've built a report with data directly imported from SSMS. After having built a cube/model in Visual Studio, I want to connect PBI desktop live to  SQL Server Analysis Services. However, when I'm trying to change to live connection in PBI desktop the connect live option is greyed out/not available. Any clues?

You cannot convert from Import to a Direct Query or Live Connection. The latter two have to be created at the inception of your report writing. You cannot even delete your tables from SSAS and do another connection that is live. Once you've done Import, that particular PBIX file is Import forever.

You can convert Direct Query to Import on the fly by doing some transformation in Power Query that DQ doesn't support. That is a one-way conversion. No going back for that PBIX file. I don't think you can convert a Live Connection to SSAS to an Import model though.

Rule of thumb is, if you want your report to be Direct Query or Live Connection, you have to develop in that mode. You cannot convert to it.

Hi @Anonymous,

Just so that I understand you correctly: You are trying to change the data source on a completed report? In this case, this is impossible, I guess. But there is a workaround: Create a new file, connect the cube via liveconnection and paste your visuals and tables into the new file via Copy&Paste. You'll certainly have to swap some measures and columns by hand, but that's still better than recreating everything. Eventually theres someone here, who has a better solution.
