I have two problems. I am working with a Sales data set that looks like this:
In order to use the quarters (which are not "dates" in this data) as categories and keep them in order, I've linked this data to another dataset with an index to keep the quarters in order. Here's the relationship (ignore the 3rd data set for now):
The goal is to create visuals like this to observe trends and patterns in the data:
So this gets to the problem. One dataset has the dates the Sales orders were placed, and a second dataset has the dates the orders were shipped. That is the 3rd dataset mentioned above.
I want to create a report that, for example, shows the sum of sales by quarter based on (a) the quarter-year corresponding to the order date vis-a-vis (b) the quarter-year corresponding to the shipment date.
If I create two *separate* reports, the totals tie out:
Though notice in the above report I am using the Year_Quarter variable and not the Index. If I use the Index, then the year-quarter totals are identical which is not true in the underlying data.
This is my first problem. I'm sure it has something to do with the index being linked to both datasets, but I can't figure it out. I've also tried having both the Order_Date and Shipment_Date in the same dataset and get the same problem.
Likewise, if I attempt the final goal (overlaying the two subtotals together), this is the result:
I'm sure the two problems are related, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.
Note that I am also building the datasets in Excel and have full control over them.
