Power Query and SQL Server

Hi,

I have a power bi file where I already have tables from SQL Server and visuals built. Now am trying to import a power query and after import I dont see the existing sql server tables/visuals. Please advice if am missing something or this is how it works where we need to import power query first then import SQL Server tables.

Thank you.

Aparna

Hi, @AparnaJ

This is not the expected behavior, as Power BI should allow you to combine data from different sources, including SQL Server and Power Query, within the same report.

Here's a step-by-step action plan to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

  • Open the Power BI file and go to the 'Home' tab. Click on 'Transform Data' to open the Power Query Editor. Look for any error messages or warnings that might indicate what went wrong with the import process.
  • In the Power Query Editor, ensure that all the queries from SQL Server are still listed. If they are missing, it's possible that the import process may have inadvertently removed them.
  • If the SQL Server tables are missing, you will need to reconnect to your SQL Server database. Go to the 'Home' tab in Power BI Desktop and click on 'Get Data'. Choose 'SQL Server' and enter the necessary connection details to import your tables again.
  • If the SQL Server tables are present but not showing up in the report view, you may need to combine the queries. Use the 'Merge Queries' or 'Append Queries' features in the Power Query Editor to combine your SQL Server data with the data from the imported Power Query.
