I was trying to use IF function to cross check 2 different tables. However it does not work as it is 2 separate tables. Do i really have to merge or append the tables? Below is my formula: Match = If('table A'[template] = 'table B'[template], "Yes", "No")

No you don't have to. You just need to utilize the DAX formula RELATED().
Try to use it like this: Match = If('table A'[template] = RELATED('table B'[template]), "Yes", "No")
Let me know how it goes. I'll also gladly elaborate.
@CTan42,
Please note that when you use RELATED() function as other post, you need to firstly create relationship using template field between the two tables.
Alternatively, merge the two tables based on the template field in query editor, then create Match column in the merged table.

Lydia
