Filled map

Good day

I have power BI desktop October 2025 installed and while adding-filled map from the visualisation pane in my report, I got an error message >map and filled map visuals are disabled >.. go to files-options and settings-options-global-security.. to enable map and filled map visuals, which I did and then clicked the ok button but there was no response, the dialogue box still remained open, I then clicked cancel then reopened to check again but the filled map option was still disabled.

Is there a solution or is this a bug or is there any other way to enable map and filled map visuals.

 Cheers

This is almost certainly a combination of security/tenant settings plus the October 2025 shift from Bing Maps to Azure Maps, not just a local bug.

Things you can try locally

  • In Desktop, go to File > Options and settings > Options > Global > Security and tick Map and filled map visuals and Use Azure Maps visual, then fully close and reopen Desktop.

  • Make sure you are signed in with your organizational account and that “Use sign-in experience” is enabled under Security as some builds require this for map visuals.

  • Check that your firewall/proxy allows calls to the Power BI map endpoints listed in Microsoft’s map tips and tricks article.

What your admin may need to do

If the checkbox stays disabled or maps remain unavailable after restart, your tenant admin must enable them in the Power BI Service Admin Portal: Settings > Admin portal > Tenant settings > Integration settings > Map and filled map visuals / Use Azure Maps visual.

If, after those steps, the option still cannot be toggled in October 2025 Desktop, it aligns with reports that this is a known issue around the Bing→Azure Maps changeover; the temporary workaround is to use Azure Maps visual (if available) or Shape Map until a later Desktop build fixes the dialog behavior.

Hello

I tried the solution provided and the problem still persist

Hi @iruobe19,

It looks like Map and Filled Map cannot be enabled because your power bi desktop is still being controlled by a tenant policy, even if you are using it personally. To confirm this please try this one step like sign out of power bi desktop, then reopen it and try enabling the setting again under File --> Options --> Security.

  • If it works after signing out, the restriction comes from the tenant you were signed into.
  • If it still does not work, then the feature cannot be enabled locally and the only option in personal desktop is to use Shape Map, which does not require any tenant settings.

Thanks and regards,

Anjan Kumar Chippa

Hi Achippa

The map, shape map [under preview features] and filled map feature is still not working after reopening PBID and enabling the settings under file options, security.

Although I am unable to sign in to PBID because I don't have a work/school email which is required by PBID, it keeps rejecting my outlook/Gmail as personal emails, could this be the reason I can't enable this features on my PBID, if so are there any workaround or other ways to sign in to PBID.

Thanks

Kind regards

Hi @iruobe19,

Yes this is expected behaviour. Power bi desktop now requires a work or school account to enable these map visuals. Personal outlook or gmail accounts cannot enable these features even in the desktop. There is no workaround to sign in with a personal email and these visuals cannot be enabled without an organizational tenant. The only supported way is to use a work or school account with the tenant setting enabled.

@iruobe19 , as I mentioned in the first post, I observed now they are not working without setting it up at the tenant level in power bi service

Thanks for the reply Amitchandak,

The tenant level is set up in the power BI service by administrators which usually applies to companies/organisations.

What I have is a power BI desktop for personal use and I can't implement this solution.

Regards

@iruobe19 , The previous risk was to make sure you are not signed in desktop and just set it in the security settings, but if that's not working, means sign in forced now and that means tenant settings are needed

Hi @iruobe19,

I recommend:

Check for corporate policy restrictions

Go to Options → Security and see if there is a padlock icon next to the setting.
If present, it is locked by IT policy and can only be changed by an administrator.

Alternative for maps If you cannot enable the visual:

Use the Azure Maps visual (native and supported).
Or install a custom visual such as Icon Map from AppSource.

Official documentation:
Create and use filled maps (choropleth maps) in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

If this response was helpful in any way, I’d gladly accept a 👍much like the joy of seeing a DAX measure work first time without needing another FILTER.

Please mark it as the correct solution. It helps other community members find their way faster (and saves them from another endless loop 🌀.

Thanks for the reply Zanqueta,

I can't check for corporate company restrictions, what I have is a power BI desktop for personal use and I can't implement this solution.
I tried but later found out Azure has been retired globally from the power BI in 2025.
I also tried the custom visual -icon map but found out it's been removed from the Microsoft app source in March 2025.
I still can't find an alternative for or install -filled map visuals.
