Maps with both filled polygons and points

I have a dashboard which uses Shape Map to compare local administrative areas according to things like poverty rates, health outcomes, and educational attainment. I use a slicer to call data into the polygons. I've now been asked to also place markers on the map to show the location of local landmarks like schools. I don't think I can do this using shape maps - there doesn't appear to be a way to use long/lat data to place objects. Switching to Azure maps would let me place the markers but then I can't see a way to have the fill color reflect data called by a slicer. Is there a way in Power BI to have both point markers and slicer-toggled filled polygons in the same map?

  • If your organization allows certified custom visuals, you might also consider our “Maps” visual. It essentially extends the built‑in Shape Map: polygons, points and routes can all be shown in one layered map, fully responsive to slicers and measures. You can color administrative regions by any measure while simultaneously placing landmarks via lat/long. The visual is free to use in Power BI Desktop, so you can test the full functionality without a license.

If you have your own GeoJSON/TopoJSON files, the lighter “Maps Lite” visual can also handle this scenario.

  • Hi pthwaites7  -Yes, but not with the built-in Shape Map visual alone. Shape Map is designed to render polygons from TopoJSON files and doesn't support overlaying latitude/longitude point layers.

can you try custom visuals  if your organization allowed, Icon Map .

    Hope this helps.

Deneb: full control to layer choropleth polygons and point markers in one spec, both responsive to slicers.

Deneb is the reliable answer if Azure Maps' filled layer won't take your measure cleanly.

  • Hi pthwaites7

I am not sure what you mean by "to have both point markers and slicer-toggled filled polygons in the same map" but if you want to highlight the selected location (not filter) and keep the markers for all then you will need to use a disconnected table to filter the map and reference the location in column in this table in a measure that will be used for gradient fill.

    Please see the attached pbix.

      Hi danextian,

Thanks for this. What I need is something like the following shape map, where the colour of each administrative region in the map is controlled by data called up by the slicer:

In addition, I need markers for specific landmarks (to be provided using long/lat data). My understanding from what I've heard so far is that neither Azure Maps nor Shape Map can do both.
