Is there a way to create an extract of the data I'm using in PBI so that I can bypass any gateways and publish it? I am using a live query connected to SQL Server. After that, what are the options for refreshing the data?
Hi Folio,
As described in this article, from the Power BI service, we can connect directly to SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular model databases and a Power BI Enterprise Gateway is required.
For other types of databases in on-premises SQL Server, we’ll need to first use Power BI Desktop or Excel to connect to, query, and load data into a data model and then import pbix file into Power BI where a dataset is created. Moreover, gateway is not required when publishing pbix file to Power BI service, but we need to install gateway when setting up schedule refresh.
In addition, please note that as your dataset is configured for a live or DirectQuery connection, you will not have the option to use scheduled refresh. Scheduled refresh is only available for imported datasets. For more details, please review this article.
Thanks,
Lydia Zhang
