I know it's not possible to apply conditional formatting to a column in a table, based on a formula, or the value of another column. But is it possible to this with R?

It is possible to apply conditional formatting with R, please review the following blogs. Also you can use UNICHAR() function as a workaround which is described in this similar thread.
