Solved

scheduled refresh timing problem

As now the credentials problems are solved, I was trying to setup scheduled refresh, but the system says that the next refresh will be in year 9999.

Also can somebody please explain, how frequent is the default refresh for excel file source stored on SharePoint online? A lot of sources say hourly refresh, but I'm trying now only to implement the free subscription. Although I've started the 60 day pro trial, but the dasboards are shared with many people with free accounts.

Thanks for the help

If you get data from OneDrive/SharePoint directly in Power BI Service as below. You should be able to refresh hourly with free account.

If you get data from an excel stored in SharePoint in Power BI Desktop, then publish to Power BI Service. You need to be Pro user if you want to refresh multiple times in one day.

According to this document,  data from a dataset that refreshes more frequently than daily is Power BI Pro content. If you create a manufacturing dashboard that updates progress multiple times during the day, anyone consuming that dashboard would need a Power BI Pro license.

Thank you for the clarification, now it is clear. So the problem is that I used PBI Desktop and published the report. If I connect to the same data in the PBI Service, that would refresh hourly even with a free account.

    Thank you for the help.

According to this official document, Power BI check for updates automatically about every hour. Could you please check in Refresh history to see if refresh is triggered for your dataset since last refresh, even it shows the next refresh will be in year 9999?

  • I assumed the same, that it should happen hourly, but it does not. The issue with the year is solved, but it only refreshes daily. Also this is showed in the Refresh hístiry, the 'scheduled' refreshes happen every day short after midnight.
This is not clearly documented. I started my pro trial, so my account should be pro, but the dashboards are shared with people with free accounts.

For now I want to make things work with the free version, as we're still in trial mode in my company.

Please try to click “Add another time” in your screenshot, and add the refresh time in one day. In that way, you should be able to refresh every hour.

  • For one of my datasets I've set that and now, people with free accounts get the message, that the report has Pro content. I've checked with a colleauge who has the free account, and it seems that only the daily refresh is available, but a 6 hour time frame can be chosen when the refresh should happen.

The documentation is not clear, or assumes a pro account by default.
