Thanks All for your comments. I finally figured it out.
The issue was that I originally published the report from PBI desktop which I downloaded from the Office store (to get the monthly updates rolled out automatically without me downloading the new vesrion) and then later I downloaded the desktop vesrion for some reason and made some changes to the report and republished then the problem occurred.
I then uninstalled the desktop version I got from The Power BI website and got the one from the store, deleted the dataset and the report in Power BI service, republ8shed...all works fine.

Hi guys

this issue will occured when you created the pbix using early desktop version(before 2018  august update), and try to update this file using august version.

as I  see ,it only occurs  in publish to web, which means the background image and imported image works well in the service.

yes, recreate the pbix and upload a new file to the service and then publish really works, but i don't think this is a good solution, because if this issue report was widely shared among the organization, the change notice will make them feeling bad.

Hi @Johnmatta,

What's version of Power BI Desktop do you use when you insert the background image?

By my test with the latest version of Power BI Desktop, everything works as expected.

Please have a try with the latest version of Power BI Desktop.

I'm on the latest Power BI desktop. I solved the issue for myself - it required deleting the dataset and report from the Power BI service and then republishing from Power BI desktop.

Hope that helps.

I'm not the OP unfortunately, so I can't set my post as the solution.

I've got the same issue as of today.. has been working fine prior to this.

Shows in the Power BI service fine, but the embedded link appears to strip all images.

Hi there

Do you see the image when viewing the report in the Power BI Service and not via the Publish to Web link?
